They've gone through 5 different 3-albums eras before this album. It's amazing how each album is a new experience that continues this band's relevance. Bonded – Rest In Violence Setting out as an underground extreme metal band with death metal overtones, they then build on the Gothic elements of their sound, increasing the sophistication with ‘Shades Of God’ (my personal favourite), before taking a turn for the more mainstream, a journey begun with ‘Icon’ continuing apace with the album that started it all for me, ‘Draconian Times’. Check out my reviews from 2020 right here: Naglfar – Cerecloth It’s also utterly stunning. Change ), You are commenting using your Facebook account. Some songs here are well worth listening to, and Nick Holmes’ soaring singing voice in the choruses of tracks like I Am Nothing, World Pretender and Fader are worth the price of admission alone. The sixteenth Paradise Lost studio album, Obsidian eschews its immediate predecessors’ gruesome, myopic approach in favour of a richer and more dynamic deluge of black shades. What we have in Icon is a confident and melodic metal soundscape that features some of the best choruses and guitar solos in the band’s history. Ending Days 8. The chorus is equal parts beautiful, mournful and aggressive in its intent. ( Log Out /  #4 – Obsidian (2020) I took my time carefully considering where to place the band’s newest work, and after two dozen or so listens since May of this year, I think I have my answer. Date of Release: 15 May 2020. The now-familiar lead guitar sound of Mackintosh ushers in the follow-up, ‘Fall From Grace’ and drives it forward, featuring frequently throughout. Symphony X. Kvaen – The Funeral Pyre Change ). There’s more of a guitar presence here, more so than Believe in Nothing, and overall, a greater sense of ferocity that was lacking on everything passed Draconian Times up to now. They have their own mapped out journey through death-doom and dark gothic metal in fantastic amazement. Sutrah – Aletheia EP Copy link. The quantity of quality is very much increased in this new golden age of the band. Arguably for the first time since their debut effort in 1990, the band had embraced their death metal roots for a record that defied all expectations. 2020-05-15 - The day has finally arrived: PARADISE LOST give their new gem "Obsidian" to the world today. Ravenghast 5:30. #6 – Draconian Times (1995) Yeah, you read that right. With songs like It’s Too Late, Last Day of Summer, So Much is Lost and Permanent Solution on the track list, it’s worth checking out at least once to make your own mind up. But with the gift of time, the likes of ‘Serenity’ with its more upbeat central riff, the explosive chorus that hits from nowhere within a generally more introspective, bass-heavy ‘Ending Days’, and the intriguing vocal embellishments during the chorus of ‘Hope Dies Young’, I can honestly say that there’s an incredible consistency at play on ‘Obsidian’. Deathwhite – Grave Image 2007 . 2020-04-24 13:00 - Today, PARADISE LOST release 'Ghosts', the second single from their new album "Obsidian", out on May, 15th, via Nuclear Blast Records. Metal Hammer named it as the 11th best metal album of 2020. Standout songs from this one include: In This We Dwell, The Glorious End and the mammoth that is Fear of Impending Hell. #7 – Medusa (2017) I can’t lie, I fucking love this record. Without question one of, if not, THE darkest albums in their discography, The Plague Within represents all things death/doom to me, and for good reason. Mariana Semkina – Sleepwalking Instead, One Second shifted leaned fully into gothic rock territory. Date de parution. Nick’s shouty Hetfield impression is also peak here, and fits the tone perfectly. It’s a fucking masterpiece. It reminds me a little more of the ‘Icon’ era in that it is a monstrous song, full of chunky riffs, that plod and lurch along with a crushing solemnity that can only come from the minds of Paradise Lost. #8 – Lost Paradise (1990) When the topic of early Paradise Lost records is brought up, I seldom hear anyone mention their debut record, and that’s a shame. Is it perfect? This album was very atmospheric and moody, much like Shades of God and Icon, but still retained the synths, pianos and melodic chorus hooks of the 2000s output by the band, all wrapped up in a slick 45-minute package. Fall from Grace 03. The intro track Darker Thoughts starts with a stunning acoustic piece, before the muscle of the guitars and growls breaks out. Firewind – Firewind Holmes’ clean vocals add to the already strong melodies that run through the song, making the whole thing resonate even more powerfully. Difficult to go wrong with any of these songs, and these final three records to rank on this last are largely interchangeable at this point. Synths are still here, but the guitars once again sounded dirty and heavy. There’s the sound of an organ and light guitar playing which are both replaced by some piano notes that sit atop some incredibly spine-tingling bass notes that shake the very foundations; simple and effective. Demons & Wizards – III #13 – One Second (1997) The band had a lot of guts to change up as drastically as they did when writing and releasing their follow-up to 1995’s Draconian Times, and that should be commended. #5 – The Plague Within (2015) With the news that Nick was replacing Peter Tägtgren, as vocalist for Bloodbath circling in 2013, expectations were high for not only what Old Nick could do for the death metal Swedes, but also what impact that would play for the future of Paradise Lost. An Autumn For Crippled Children – All Fell Silent, Everything Went Quiet And ‘Obsidian’ is undoubtedly the product of a special band at the peak of their morose powers. Ending Days 4:36 8. 2017 reviews #2 – Shades of God (1992) The levels of imagination and experimentation on this album are spellbinding. It creates a distinctly 80s Goth flavour, but this shorter, faster track soon returns to familiar territory, with the stop-start churning riffs that emerge at points being a definite highlight, alongside a memorable chorus, and the deliciously unsettling way that Holmes is able to chant the name ‘Jesus Christ’. Regardless, on their tenth studio album, the band went back to the drawing board and attempted to redefine exactly who and what Paradise Lost was. I never tire of those elegant, sombre lead lines of Mackintosh; they are synonymous with the band and yet more emerge here. Fall From Grace 3. Darker Thoughts Lyrics. There’s a bass and drum section that’s really nice, before Holmes reverts to the vocal approach so memorable from the ‘Draconian Times’ days, that rich, mellifluous croon that’s instantly recognisable. Coupled with the cleaner production and some genuine guitar riffs and bass lines at last, this album comes full circle in the experimentation period and does enough right to edge it up on the others that were released around the similar time. Irist – Order Of The Mind Performances are solid across the board too, first instance of Nick’s growl that wouldn’t return for decades. Obsidian, the group's 16th studio album, was recorded with producer Jaime Gomez Arellano, eschews it's immediate predecessors' gruesome, myopic approach in favor of a richer and more dynamic deluge of black shades. Music videos were released for the songs "Darker Thoughts" and "Fall from Grace". ‘Obsidian’ is clearly much more heavily influenced by Gothic trappings, particularly those from the 80s and the intro to ‘The Devil Embraced’ draws from this well of inspiration too. I really have ranked Draconian Times, the landmark gothic metal masterpiece this low in their discography. The Devil Embraced 5.
